“We don’t get any respect” seems to be a particularly apt phrase when it comes to construction materials engineering and testing (CoMET) services. But it’s difficult to understand why, given that these services can do so much to help prevent claims and disputes that can quickly grow to entangle all or most all principal project participants. When more client representatives, fellow design professionals, contractors, and government officials come to understand what CoMET services really are all about, more attitudes will change. All firms that provide CoMET services can help explain, through outreach and education, and ASFE’s CoMET Committee has developed a new tool for the purpose. Titled Construction Materials Engineering and Testing – The Fundamentals, the new tool comprises a single Microsoft Word document designed for cutting and pasting onto Microsoft PowerPoint slides. ASFE-Member Firms can individually modify copy as they see fit, and can choose their own design (e.g., featuring their own firm ID) for a master slide.
